Hi
I do not know if there is any other Iranians in this group or not , but here in
Iran we call friends by their names and at work and formal places we call each
other by familynames.
Iranian names which are originally Arabic have two words like mine(Ali Reza) but
persian ones are one word and simple and has roots in our history.
Families are selected based on the city were the family has sttled during the
years or according to myths or beliefs.
My family name , Mani , was selected by my grandpa and has roots in our history
and Mani was a prophet who was a master in painting.According to bookshelf
encyclopedia , Mani means :
Ma·nes
Ma·nes (mā#697;nēz) also Ma·ni (mä#697;nē), A.D.216?-276?
Persian prophet and founder of Manichaeism. He professed that the world is a fusion of the equal but opposite forces of good and evil. " Anyway ,you can call me by my name or familyname , but friends call me Reza and from now on I will sign my e-mails by Reza.Reza in Arabic means satisfaction.
Cheers
Reza

For westerners I think there is always going to be confusion with other languages. We all go by our first name, and when we see names that we don't recognize we pick one and use it.
I once knew a brilliant Vietnamese mechanical engineer and he didn't care what you called him, as long as you called him. I once asked him about the proper way, but he didn't really care about it.
You can call me Paul or Bowers. Sometimes people call me shithead and I respond to that as well.
