Have a look at Kellog "Design of Piping Systems" section 4.2 "Preliminary Segregation of Lines With Adequate Flexibility". It is necessary to read the description so I have not copied the "Formula" Also look at ANSI/ASME B31.1 1986 clause 119.7 "Analysis". Also note the disclaimers.

field over the years. Even the experts have no conclusive formulae or
critieria. The reason being is that every piping system is different
(bar
duplicate systems). Large Engineering consultants general produce
guidelines for the selection of piping that requires pipe stress
analysis,
but at the end of the day it is up to the Pipe Stress Analyst.
Do a search for the Norsok standard on the web, a good starting point.
But
experience and understanding of pipings systems will refine your skills
over the years.

Dear All,
Can anybody tell us when Piping Flexibility Analysis is needed? I have referred B.31.3 & B31.1 (clause 319.4.1 & 119.7.1) but not reached any clear conclusion.
What are criteria involved for Piping Stress Analysis. Are there any minimum requirements to be considered while deciding for Flexibility Analysis?
