You'll get better at it quicker if you code up a simple problem on your
own instead of copying someone else's work. Find a problem you already
know the answers to--take it from a textbook or maybe a hand calculation
you've already made for a previous problem in your office. When you get
the results study everything carefuly and make sure you understand what
the program is telling you and that every detail squares with the answers
you already know from the closed form solution.
The biggest benefit of this approach is to help you verify results and troubleshoot your mistakes. All engineering software has bugs, but the biggest source of problems is user blunders--learning the approach on your own will help find both. Using the program docs to get started, thus learning where to find answers is good, too.
