OT New Guinea

I am about to be asked to go to New Guinea (NG) to check out a small hydro power station that is misbehaving. Probably pipes, or crap governor response. To check it out I am sure I will have to go bush (walk the pipeline).
Before I am asked I would like to have a response, and I heard NG a bit dodgy; spears and guns and stuff.
Is it as bad as I have been told, or is it a beat up? I had heard the highlands are OK but stay away from the lowlands including Moresby. Being a hydro, I guess it will be close to high country.
My initial response is "No" but I can repay a favour by going. Hence my question.
Anyone been there?
Advice?
Dont want to get shot until I am at least 85.
