I don't think it's a matter of linear flow so much as a matter of
resolution. Ball valves go from full open to full closed in only a
quarter of a turn. Globe and gate valves take many turns between full
open and full closed so the flow rate resolution is finer. Flow through
a ball valve goes from totally shut off the completely clean and
unobstructed when the valve is open, which isn't the case with globe
and gate vales.
