Hi cckla,
Working pressure, test pressure and bursting pressure are requirements that are
specified in the contract by the Client.
Working pressure refers to the normal pressure at which the system performs.
Test pressure refers to the pressure at which the system is tested to prove it's
efficacy with respect to it's system demand and Bursting pressure refers to the
ultimate pressure which the system must satisfy, with respect to it's normal
working.
For example, in standard water supply piping in India, the test pressure for the
pipes and valves is 1.5 times the working pressure. For valves, the bursting
pressure is specified at 2 times the working pressure.
The safety factors like 50% and 100% in the above example take care of surges or
fluctuations the system may undergo under various working conditions such as
water hammer etc. The Safety Factor takes care of the normal fluctuations so
that even under those conditions, the system is not subject to undue stresses
which may eventually lead to it's failure. Remember the last straw on the
camel's back?
In case of one type of fire hoses, the normal pressure is 14 Bar, test pressure
is 21 Bar and Bursting pressure is 35 Bar. You can well imagine the stresses
the fire hose will be subject to in an actual fire fighting situation. The
limit of 35 Bar on the bursting pressure explians the point.

What is pipe bursting ?
How is it different than hydrostatic test ?
What should be the respective pressure or ratio compared to operating pressure ?
Please guide me.
Thanks.
