Assuming I understand correctly, I don't think there is a way this can
be done automatically. I.E., if the sender to whom you are replying
didn't trim the message contents you end up having all comments from
contributers to that particular discussion thread.
This can be very annoying if someone replies to a discussion while they are subscribed to the digest version of the list.
Usually when I reply to a discussion I'll edit out non-relevant text.
