The best solution is to send back the failed piece of pipe and tell
your supplier you want another one that will pass the test. The piece
failed because it lacks the necessary ductility. Austenitic stainless
doesn't heat treat--the solution anneal will only affect corrosion
resistance. The pipe might have inclusions from insufficient discard
from the ingot or there might be an excess of sulphur. You can't tell
without doing some more testing. I wouldn't use it without re-running
all the mechanical and physical tests specified by SA-312. And if the
rest of the pipe in the order is from the same heat, I'd reject them,
too. Austenitic stainless is hugely ductile when it's made
properly--there should be no problem with a flattening test.
