Basic function of USM is to measure ultrasonic pulse traveling time between two signal condition. Signal which travel in-line with and against flow direction..

The USM then calculate the volumetric flow of flowing fluid as V = f (L,D,T) with :

V = Volumetric flow
L = Geometri of Sensing device arrangement.
D = Geometry of pipe inside dia. (meter tube)
T = time difference.

If you wanted to measure the volumetric flow by USM, its don't need to know the speed of sound in measured fluid.
