Hi Steve,
PDS, by all means, is very good for handling the
engineering deliverables of a processing unit. It
gives error-free piping isometrics, the spools
fabricated using which, will by all means, fit in the
plant space, without any sort of reworks or
rectifications. That gives an edge on the rework
labour costs and control on project schedules, and of
course, the last minute headaches. Added advantage is
on the budget for the bulk procurements. Since the MTO
reports become precise, the roughage or bump cushions
can be reduced drastically, cutting costs on the
wasted/unused materials. All this have a value in the
overall EPC pricing.
Now the quetion is, what is the price that we pay for
all these virtues! The PDS license cost, interpreted
in the hourly utilisation platform, becomnes very
high. The data customisation and the software
administration is another front which needs careful
watching.
All these, weighed against the size of the project,
becomes the deciding fact. In the context of a small
size unit, the PDS viability may not be cost
effective. But, yes; if the units are of the type of
repetitive nature, if the same design could be
executed on a continuous upgraded manner, that too
regularly, then PDS would work out to be economical.
On a stand alone mode, PDS on small units is not a
wise conclusion.
Good luck!
Cheers!
