Earlier there was some interesting discussion in this forum on this subject. If you check them in "Piping Design " Archive you will get it.

"Inside ASME B16.47 there are 2 types of flanges,

• Series A that specifies flange dimensions for general use flanges.
• Series B specifies flange dimensions for compact flanges.
• In general, Series B have smaller bolt circle diameters than Series A

flanges.

• These two series of flanges are not interchangeable..
• The user should recognize that some flanged valves, equipment bolted

between flanges, and flanged equipment may only be compatible with bolt

circle diameter of one series of flanges.

THIS IS FROM KANNAN: "Larger size flanges for piping and valve applications are covered in ASME B16.47 (There are
two series - large and compact covered in the standard MSS SP 44. They are also available in API 605 (compact)
and ASME B16.47 (large)). ASME B16.47 covers flanges upto 26" and Class ratings of upto and including 900.

Another reference available is API 6A Specification for Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment which covers
flanges from 2.1/16" to 21.1/4" and in working pressures 2000 psi to 20000 psi. API Bulletin 6AF covers the
technical capabilities of these flanges with load and torque capacity curves".
