SLAMMIN' IRON: REBUILDING THE WORLD
Wednesday April 13 at 9pm on CBC-TV
Slammin' Iron: Rebuilding The World follows the lives of ironworkers from Canada as they help rebuild the World Trade Center in New York City. These amazing men-from a proud community of Mohawks on the Kahnawake Reserve near Montreal-and their rivals, descendents of Newfoundland fishermen now living in New York, follow in the footsteps of their fathers and grandfathers who built the most famous skyline in the world.
One of the men points to a well known 1932 photograph of ironworkers having their lunch on a beam, 800 feet above sixth avenue, and quietly brags: "That's my grandfather, fourth from the left." Now a new generation risks life and limb walking the girders, to rebuild what was lost on Sept. 11, 2001. We hear their very personal stories of Sept. 11, and how they have already raised and bolted together the steel columns and beams for Building 7 of the World Trade Center-the last of three buildings to fall, and the first to rise from the ashes.
Slammin' Iron: Rebuilding the World explores the rough and tumble culture of New York ironworkers. The breathtaking footage from atop the new 7 World Trade Center is both riveting and impressive, as viewers witness first hand the dangers these men face every day of their working lives. Are they mere mortals? Viewers can decide. Their campaign to rebuild the World Trade Center is an act of defiance-a story of skill, determination and bravado.
Slammin' Iron is written and directed by Gemini Award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker Jerry Thompson; produced by Leigh Badgley for Omni Film Productions; and executive produced by Gabriela Schonbach. Received on Wed Apr 13 21:34:00 2005
