Re: Flat end for piping in creep range

Dragos,
I am not an expert on the stress and strain behaviour; but still, there is good sense in selecting a smooth transition of profiles, from pipe to a contoured welding cap. The stress distribution is transferred from a radial pattern to an axial mode.
In the context of a plate end closure, the weakest section is the joint itself; thanks to the care taken in executing the welding. Since a lot of risk is involved in case, such a joint bursts, the results could be catastrophic. And that is the reason plate end closures are not recommended for high-pressure applications; the least is said about the CREEP zones. The performance of a stress relief groove is anybody’s guess!
