Socket welds are advantageous because they are easy to install at site
as it doesn't need much time/ effort for assembly/alignment and also easy
to weld (just fillet).
Socket welds are associated with couplings which will provide in-built
reinforcement.
Half-couplings for branch and instrument tappings can be shop welded on
the main pipes avoiding the site job on the main pipes.
The disadvantage is the existence of crevice, which makes it mis-fit for
the corrosive services.
Services like lube oil are butt-welded for ensuring proper flushing.
Sockets welds usually have less quality checks at site (only DP checks are
performed) could have higher rate of failures.

Re: [PipingDesign] Comparing buttweld and socketweld joints
Both the weld types have their own advantages and disadvantages. SW joints are prefered for small bore lines because it is very difficult to clean the weld material (flux) that biulds inside the pipe.
Some companies are avoiding the SW welds for small sizes too and insisting
on BW joins by following strict and sofisticated weld procedures and practices to avoid the flux build up inside the pipe.
With best regards.

Re: [PipingDesign] Comparing buttweld and socketweld joints
Butt weld joints are always the preffered weld for
high pressure services, it has better strength, better
fatigue life in vibrating pipes, and can be inspected
through radiography for any weld defects.
Hope it has replied your query.
