I don't know what is the fuss all about.
There are examples of branch calcs in B31.3, B31.4, and B31.8. Some folks just need to be directed in the right direction.
I agree though that providing a spreadsheet to rookies is the wrong thing to do. Every engineer should build his own, so he will have a sense if the calc results are reasonable or not.
