Ralph brings up a good point. When you start using salvaged material,
you need to know a couple of things--whether the item itself conforms
to the design requirements of the construction you want to use it on.
For example you won't want to use salvaged 304H pieces with 316L
piping, and you can't always tell from the piece itself. You need to
know the material spec for sure when you specify the weld process.
There are some other fab considerations with reused material as well. You need to be real careful that there aren't any service related defects in the part and that the weld scarf is free from contaminants and not embrittled from processes like carbon-arc gauging. I'd be very nervous about reusing materials like that, particularly if all I had was someone's word that the material was probably OK.
