The use of A307 is indeed allowed in ASME B16.5-2003 up to class 300. But Note 12 of Table 1B and 5.3 has additional restrictions in its use. OK lets consider that the application is in petrochem where a flange with a class rating of 300 normally exceed 200degC. The use of A193 and A307 was allowed. Remember now theres a restriction for A307 and almost none for A193.
The plant was commissioned. Factor in the chances of mixing up A193 with A307. Can anyone imagine now the horror facing the Prodcution, Safety and Maintenance people in a very near future? Lets compound the problem. Consider that some of the flanges in class 300 are carrying highly hazardous chemicals. The risk factor now is spiranling upward. I can cite few more but let us stop here. Reason enough for us just to maintain the use of one spec bolt for flange joint and our preference for A193.
