thumb rules of general piping

Hello,
I would like to know general rules used when designing piping for say fire fighting. That is general procedure like:

1. Which formula used for computing friction head(I used darcy equation--is it practical)
2. How do u find out if the calculated friction head is correct?

Could anyone give a brief procedure, I understand it is very vast field but still ---
