Correct on the issue of whether to buy a standard or design your own.
But be careful designing your own to follow the ASME Code rules. Use
any reference you like to come up with proportions you like, but if
you're using B31.x you need to satisfy the ASME Code calculations.
If by Taylor Forge, you mean their booklet 'Modern Flange Design' there
are some excellent worksheets for organizing your arithmetic. They also
make great models for automating the calculation with Excel or some
other spreadsheet software.
