Loosely related is the use of www.eng-tips.coms. I use it as an independent consultant to not only ask relevant questions but also to mentor/advise others. So for my business it is great. I can search FAQs for quick response without wasting others time with repeat questions.
I worked with Bovis Lend Lease for many years and they have a Lotus Notes based Intranet type of project management system specifically for large construction projects. It really is just a large blog. Correspondence is covered but also current text files, test records, drawings and specifications are up loaded, requests for information posted, purchase orders and site instructions can be issued.
This system known as ProjectWeb won awards 6 or more years ago. I am sure now there are commercial packages out there that do the same. But for small business a blog would be great. You could set one up for each project to keep records focussed. Can a blog be expanded to take attached files? This would allow drawings and photos to be made available?
Perhaps Paul could earn a buck or two flogging ready made blog sites, even betrain moderators etc

I find the idea very appealing for project communications, especially project diaries. Everything is in one place that is easily searched and data (files) of any kind can be attached. If a new person comes into a project, the discussion is all there, instead of emails which are never cc'd to everyone that needs them. Seems like a good discussion/archival environment.
Has anyone used such an system in a professional setting?
