B31.1 uses standard ASME material specs. The material selection for the
entire ASME Code (all sections and divisions including piping) is
pretty much what I outlined. All the QA provisions are noted on the
specs, except for paperwork requirements which are spelled out in each
vessel supplier's QA manual. The material specs for, say, Section III
are taken from Section II just like the material specs for power
boilers or unfired vessels. There are materials which aren't permitted
for the same temperature range in every section, but there's nothing
special about B31.1 materials. Or materials for Section III for that
matter. The actual allowables may be different, but even that depends
on the design methodology.
Is it possible that your client means he wants only materials covered
by Section II specifications (like SA-312) and not the corresponding
ASTM specifications which would be designated A-312? ASME specs
sometimes exclude materials otherwise included in the ASTM version. The
'bells and whistles' are all found in the Supplementary Requirements or
are special requirements negotiated between the manufacturer and the
supplier on a case-by-case basis. What particular 'bells and whistles'
are you looking for.
