Hi
I was more fortunate to witness use of a HOT tapping m\c in a running line where if not done it called for a total battery shutdown of a refinery. First I would like to highlight the Hot tapping machine has a limitation of pressure. Maximum Pressure u can do Hot tapping is up to 600# that to with lot of precaution and care. Yes described by Chris and others we end up having coupon. The coupon itself is profile cut to the given size whether equal or one size less or more. Equally size hot tapping can be done but it requires elaborate skill, care, position and precaution. The hot tapping m\c itself is a peculiar type where in on top of coupon flange mounted a sandwich valve through which it is drilled, bored and cut. Also retractable removal of parent material provision is also possible. Some of the Hot Tapping have a bypass arrangement for pressure equalizing. All welds are done from externally on the coupon. The only main criteria to be establish is to have a clearance for installing the m\c vertical giving space for removal of retractable spindle from top. Accuracy and the depth of boring has to be measured initially by the operator before installation of HOT tapping m\c. There is lot it can do then being apprised of. It is worth to witness one joint and feel the experience
