The book by Charles Becht IV " Process piping: The complete Guide to ASME B31.3" 2nd edition 2004, from ASME Press gives some good guidelines as to when to use "computer analysis" of piping systems. Also otherwise excellent, if not compulsory, background reading for piping stress analysts.
