An old favorite question...

   Picks up numerous threads. The bottom line IMHO is that friction should be considered and accounted for in the design. And it should never be viewed as a "help". In fact some building codes specifically forbid the use of friction in seismic loading as a restraint.

   This question is consulting in nature, and frankly is often answered by the use of common sense. What is the purpose of analysis? A computer game that has nice output or an analysis and design that works in the real world?
