Also consider movie-making, where appearance is more important than reality. That field of 3D graphics makes a lot of money and is much more glamourous and cool than boring old engineering.
What will be truly interesting will be when the 3D modelling software has material characteristics and kinematics built-in.
Imagine building a relatively simple pump/piping/tank system in software and testing it in real time with different fluids, materials of construction, etc.
