Paul,
I had seen the 'gator pic at the link you provided a good while ago and believe it is "legit" -- I think it was taken a few years ago on an 84" pipeline project in the Tampa area (Florida, USA -- I heard this roughly 13'/4 m long gator, a pretty good "hoss" by North American standards, may have essentially been sort of eased out of the nearby canal/controlled with a backhoe, and don't know who the wrangler was who at some point did the ubiquitous duct tape job!) There is incidentally another captioned pic floating around with a similar very large critter more recently that I don't believe is entirely legit, supposedly taken in New Orleans in the process of the Katrina flood -- I don't think that particular one however was taken anywhere close to the Americas.) I've had this one at the site for a while.

Rubbergator? Staged, stunned reptile for the picture?

The gator looks to have had its jaws duct-taped and there's a somewhat flimsy rope attached (usually two ropes are needed, no?). Based on my knowledge of the nature of pipeline crews, it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't wait for Steve the Aussie croc wrangler to show up and just did it themselves without the TV cameras.

The image indicates that excavation was done in preparation for the big pipes (still sheathed) to be laid. The ground surface seems to be clay-like.
