It was pretty crude and expensive back in the 70's, but these days it's
fairly common. Try a Google on CFD and you'll get lots of hits.
The technique is a bit like FEA for structural work. It's not for amateurs any more than FEA is, but a reasonably skilled engineer can get answers of the kind you've described.
