On a recent project the stress guys were stressed because of large pipe sizes and movement (30" and up, I think Paulin knows a bit about this). The vessel manufacturers didn't want to take the loads (understandably) and there was much discussion.

IMO, they'll eventually have to go with big expansion joints.
