Christopher,
ASME have had a great push in SE Asia to get memebership. They now profess to be an international learned society. When they turned up in Sydney 12 people attended their presentation. Most said "what are you doing here" apart from trying to lift your flagging membership. Apparently in North America the membership is ageing and as members fall off the perch no one else is joining. The ultimate is that they will relocate to Beijing, reduce fees to a few dollars but that wont matter as half a billion members will join.

My own opinion is that it's currently advertising itself as both, but
it's really working like a fast train to irrelevance.
