Hi All,
My father worked for the London Transport for 47 years. When he retired they gave him a pension of 13 shillings and sixpence a week. He worked through the Depression and the Second World War, 35 years night work. He told me never to trust the bastards and to work for myself as soon as I could. He threw the gold watch they gave him back at them. I have been contracting/consulting for 35 years now. Never looked back. You get more respect working on this basis.
Regards

Hi Barbara,
I endorse the comments of Chris; all the very best in your new endeavour.
We started out on our own back in 96 and have enjoyed the ups-and-downs of self employment. I don't think that I would be lured back to work for someone as a full time general day jobbie, too old now and too grumpy.
You now, more than ever, can use that old cliché that epitomises people like you that take the plunge: "If it is to be it's up to me" and "the cheque is in the mail". :-)
Good luck!
Cheers,

Just testing my new email address.
After 9 years as staff with Mitsui Babcock, I have taken the leap into the world of contracting, currently working with Jacobs in Grangemouth. Its all petrochem, ASME B31 and Caesar, bit of a change from nuclear plumbing, PSA5 and BS806.
