Something very liberating about being a hired gun. i started work back
in the 60's, when lifetime employment was still implied, and coping
with the 'insecurity' of contract work was the utmost in professional
courage. I'd been on my own doing a mix of contract and consulting work
for about a year when I realized I was totally spoiled for a 'real'
job. Contracct work puts employment on a sound business basis and
effectively gets you out of the range of the worst of office politics.
You don't have to pick sides in departmental brawls, and you don't have
to work if someone's pet project isn't funded enough to pay you. The
best part is that you're there for your technical skills, not to play
silly games to show your boss what a team player you are.
I think it's great. Good luck.
