Adil:

Either material can work. 409 and 304 are rather different materials; 300 series stainless steels are known as "Austenitic" stainless and 400 series are "ferritic". 304 is probably the most common stainless steel, it forms and welds very nicely. 409 is probably the least expensive. It does not form or "work" as easily as 304, nor is it as easy to weld. 409, specifically, is most often used in automobile exhaust systems. Vendors will typically propose or quote 304 or 304L, because it's easy to get, and easy to work with. your customer may have specified 409 because is a less expensive material. However, because fabricators often do not have a large supply of 409 available, and also may not have weld rod for 409, it ends up being more costly in the long run.

Subject
[PipingDesign] Comparison b/w SS304L and SS409

Hi Everybody!

I just wanted your expert opinion regarding material selection. Can anybody guide me, out of Stainless steel SS409(AISI 409)and SS304L(AISI 304L), which one is better considering their usability for gas turbine exhaust stack?

Actually the gas turbine manufacturer is offering exhaust stack of gas turbine made out of SS304L, instead of SS409 as originally specified by the Consultant.

I wanted to know:

Will the offered material by gas turbine manufacturer (SS304L) makes any difference?

And considering SS304L and SS409, which material is most widely used in construction of gas turbine exhaust stack?

I have searched the web and found following site which offers comparison of various grades of Stainless steel including SS304L and SS409. But I am unable to draw any solid conclusion.

Appreciate for any input in this regard.

Thanks

Adil
