Yes, but in the initial phases of equipment layout the direct approach is best. By this time, the critical (hot, cold, expensive, awkward, etc.) piping and major equipment will have been identified and what is most needed at this stage is preliminary input from stress and process. At this point, the layout is still a bit fluid and mechanical and process need a "picture" that they can tweak to optimal, mutually-agreeable compromises.

Equipment foundations and piperacks typically do not play a major role at this stage.

Just my thoughts.
