Based on your questions, I conclude that you did not select mechanical engineering as your major in school, but someone else did. Or you selected it because it was something you could do to earn a decent living, but you have no passion or greate desire. Therefore, since you are asking others to select your field, anything will do, as it is not important to you which one is best for you.

The "homework" you need to do is to kindly ask mechanics, welders, pipefitters and/or millwrights if they will allow you to follow them around as they do their jobs and tell you what they are doing, and what stupid design mistakes to avoid. If they develop a trust in you, consider asking them if they will allow you to carry their tools for them, and then later learn to use some basic tools.

By the way, I would NEVER hire a new graduate to do design work, unless he was a craftsman before he went to school. I would consider hiring a new grad to do drafting, and then, if he showed promise, send him to maintenance or construction for a few years to learn from craftsman.

Hello friends,
This is shankar from final year student of mechanical engineering branch. Recently i got placed in campus interview in a design based company. Later i got details that the company works on piping and process design works. As u guys friends of mine has to give me suggestion about the following things.

  1. What i need to concentrate or do?
  2. which field should i select.
  3. is their home work needed for me to do before i join the company. 4.what subjects should i be strong before doing the piping field.

please guys give me suggestions for these. as i require to cope up with design field.
