Good question, as I was just pondering this the other day.

The relevant factor is probably the heat affected zone, which I think was commented-on here a few years ago.

Related is the question of how close you can weld a branch, re-pad or olet. The pipingdesign archives probably has some replies, but none of these are guaranteed answers.

Some say it is 2" but that likely depends on pipe wall thickness and specific welding procedures (I don't know enough to be more helpful, maybe others do). One NPS is likely the safest way to go unless you're really stuck for a solution.
