Its been a very long time ( about3 decades ago) since i took a course in Value Engineering. Been involved with so many projects related to a major debottlenecking or capacity expansion in refineries/petrochem including HVAC (over 3 decades) aside from building/running plants - but not a thing was spoken about Value Engineering lately. Its risk here and risk there and all talks about controlling incidents, duration and cost (the deliverables) and endless report/followups.
Times a changing. Man, the tech today can sometimes overwhelm you. Primavera, SAP, Coade, PDS, Meridium, Windows apps, etc. Im not even talking here of the myriad diagnostic/analytical tools like vibration, IR, AE, 3D scanning, etc .
But if youre focus just on piping (and assuming youre familiar with B31 req't) -> built/fab/design to ASME spec and you intend to work on an operating plant then I suggest you get an understanding of the API Inspection Code plus the RBI and FFS and how these application software can be migrated to the company ERP solution..

I set up http://pipingdesign checkers. com/ recently but I haven't done anything with it yet.
Send me your old, your weak, your disenfranchised/ retired expert piping guys.
Rates will be very high, my cut will be very low and everything will be done electronically.
