Ducts could be circular or rectangular.

If you are limited in space, area of flow for recangular shape takes less space. It is economical for process where is pressure is low <1.0 psig

If it is pressurized line, the required wall thickness for rectangular shape is much thicker that circular pipe.

Example 1: I just installed a shell and tube heat exchanger, the 10" pipe inlet to the exchanger wall is 0.375", the exchanger header box (rectangular) wall is 1.5" thick and must be ASME coded vessel..

Example 2: at one end of the 10", we installed a weld cap 0.375" thick, somewhere else, we install a blind flange that is 1.75" thick.
