Check valves can be kept under ground. But Maintaineability point of view, have to provide valve pit.Maintaineability again depends on type of service fluid and the line parameters.

You need to coat the valve for underground service http://www.farwst.com/ccp/pipeline/tapecoat07.htm.

If the valve is flanged, the nuts/bolts threads shall also be coated. Ask for a coating that will not harden so the nuts/bolts can be removed later for maintenance on the valves. I used this stuff before and it works well. Also, you could machine down your bolts (few mills) and coat them with ceramic.

The space between flanges and the space between the valve top cover and body must be isolated by using tape coat or heavy grease.

I hope this help.

Based on the situation we have, valve pit sounds like what i have to go with, althogh it'll be costely, the nautrilization pit is already been built and is underground itself, they need those check valve fot the backflow so it has to be right before the discharge and underground, is the valve pit as the same as valve box? and if i wanted to go with that what considerations do i need to make?
