ask pump manufacturer, this are are to avoid turbulrnce as fluid is drawn into eye of impeller. However, side suction are the one where you would like to keep this 5d. Top suction normally don`t call for this sort of restriction and end suction are not as as stringent as side suction.

How much straight length we have to maintain in Pump suction line? I heard we have to maintain 5D straight length. Is it necessary for all types of pumps like top suction top discharge, or end suction top discharge, or side suction side discharge or in side suction top discharge pumps?
