Dear Ravi,

         By the application view, there is no problem to put a vapor stream in tube side of a shell and tube heat exchanger. A good example is a vapor stream at very high pressure than another stream, in this case is preferable to put the stream at higher pressure in the tube side because is cheaper (mechanical design) and safety. Another case is a gas/gas application where in this situation there is no choice. So put a gas stream in shell side is a good practice not an obligation. The advantage to put a gas stream in shell side is because we get a better overall heat transfer coefficient (U) than put this same stream in tube side. This is truth because the shell side gets a better turbulence condition than tube side and compensates a little bit the bad thermal conductivity of the gases have. Pay Attention in tube side vapor/steam condensing application where is not recommended use tube diameter smaller than 1 inches to avoid plug flow and erosion in tubes and covers. In gas application pay attention too in problems of vibration to avoid undesired damages and a short equipment cycle life. In the market there are several software packages to rigorous shell and tube heat exchanges thermal and mechanical design and vibration analysis like HTFS, B-JAC and HTRI. The TEMA is a good source for understand the vibration problems and analysis.

Hi
Can anyone just tell ,in case of Shell & tube heat exchanger or in any other HE can we provide vapors in tube side.... actually wat i knw is in Liquid - liquid case first we do check the corrosive nature then will decide whr 2 take in shell r tube side ...usually we do take corrosive liquids in tube sides...But what if its a corrosive vapor...can we take it in tube side??????,
