Find out why your contractor wants to change and how much money it
will save you or your customer. If there is a reason why the 40 mm
was specified to begin with, find this out too. If you're being asked
to make changes, you need to justify them technically, and in order
to do this you need to get a solid handle on why the displacement was
specified in the first place and whether the change will benefit you
or your client.
Other people's practice may be of cultural value but it may not apply to your situation. It's likely that the contractor has his own reasons for wanting the change, and you should be very clear what they are and that they're in the best interests of someone besides the contractor.
