As Chris Wright replied to the same question on Aug 22 (two days ago):
Go to school
Learn strength of materials, fundamentals of engineering drawing,
basic materials science and the math to go along.
Get an internship or pre-professional job where you learn the basics
of design
Take a seminar (or do some serious self-study) on piping Codes
Get a demo copy of Caesar and experiment
with it until you can use it in design and debug your own errors
after several years of schooling, and then some years of working with a good mentor, viola! you are there. You might be able to short-cut some steps if you happen to be particularly astute and inciteful. Do not think it can be done correctly merely by learning to use the software. You could kill people that way.
