Subject: Re: [PipingDesign] Under-hung Expansion Loop

Have seen both arrangements.... if the "details" are properly taken care of either works.....

Member B31.3, Piping Engineer - Stress Analysis, Pipe Supports, Component Design, and Surge Analysis... according to my daughters master of unimportant trivia

For a 12 inch 250 lb saturated steam main on an 300 ft long arbor, not

enough clearance was provided to locate a pipe expansion loop above the

steam tier elevation. (The piping is installed, and now the project is

wanting a flexibility analysis to consider pipe expansion.) An under-hung

loop will fit because there is clearance below the steam tier. At first I

didn't like an under-hung design because of its potential to trap

condensate. But an over-hung loop will trap condensate will trap condensate

much to the same degree ahead of an over-hung loop. So, it seems that as

long as an adequate drip is provided, and as long as the effect of pipe

growth in the vertical piping is accounted for in terms of maintaining

adequate pipe slope for drainage, both approaches, over-hung or under-hung

are about equally safe and functional in the long run. Any experience to

suggest otherwise?
