The subject gasket involved to my understanding is a common flat gasket
with inner ring. In general the inner rings are 316(L) as a minimum.
316 is resistant to formic acid to an extend, neither the flange, gasket
inner rings are affected or corroded.
More preference is given to flat non metallic gaskets without any rings,
depending on the design condition, for chemical resistance as your case.
The selection will depend on the resistance
measured by the pH range. For example PTFE gaskets are resistance to 0 to
14 pH value. Other factors involved in selection are the compresssibility
range,
recovery rangeg, creep relaxation etc. Other alternative will be the
expanded graphite precompressed rings with corrosion inhibitors for good
sealing and corrosion resistance.
However concerning the fugitivity of the service concerned pl. verify with one of the following very good gasket manufacturers SEVAL, JUNGTEC, KROLL&ZELLER to name a few.

[PipingDesign] Need Help on Selecting Gasket
Hello,
I need small help on selecting the Gasket.
In one of our design for Chemical Injection skid,
We have Formic Acid Tank and Formic Acid Injection Pump skid.
The Line connecting from Formic Acid Tank to the Pump is of 2" in size and the pipe material is "ASTM A312 TP 316 SEAMLESS" as per ANSI B36.19/10.
The Flanges used are "A182 F316, WELD NECK RAISED FACE WITH 300#" as per ANSI B16.5
The Gasket used are "1.5mm Graphite / metal laminate having reinforment lamella of Nickel or AISI 316" as per ANSI B16.21.
The design has been made as per the piping specification says.
Now the Question Arised from the Client is:
Will the inner ring of Gasket gets corode? and is there any chances of leakage because of corrosion and does this affect the flanges too?
Now I need your guidlines and suggestion:
If gasket does have any such problem then what is the solution or what type of gasket we need to use?
Is there any alternatre solution to this? if such problem really occurs.
Expecting your guidelines and suggestions please...
Thanks and Regards,
