B31.1 : Power Piping code Origin Power Piping used in steam generation and power plants. The original B31 code. This is a more proscriptive code than B31.3 but anyone who makes the simplified statemnt that it is more conservative is off base. Its application is basically as stated although in recent years power plants being constructed in the Northern region of Canada have been using B31.3 criteria. Overall the philosophy is that every line in a power plant is as important as the next to its functioning
B31.3 Process Piping Code... was taken from the B31 code for Petrochem... used on a worldwide basis.... This code allows more leeway by a qualified designer in design matters.... Materials are handled vastly different than B31.1 notch toughness at low temperatures is addressed by material requirements also examination varies drastically from B31.1 B31.3 is a risk based code which categorizes fluids realtive to their hazard to injury.
Which is more hazardous??? depens on the circumstances of each but drop for drop HF is the most vile!
