RE: SHOE IN PIPELINE OF STEAM

Shoes - beyond Richards comments - also provide adaptability for installation of horizontal guides & anchors per piping stress analysis. I normally do not see the need for 3 ft. long shoes for the reasonable limits of expansion allowed for expansion loops. Also shoes are used for vertical piping guides - where 1 to 4 quadrants have shoes surrounded by a structural steel frame

RE: [PipingDesign] SHOE IN PIPELINE OF STEAM

All shoes, regardless of the line temperature, are there to lift the pipe off of the support and facilitate maximum insulation wrap around the pipe. They also provide a sliding surface eliminating external wear on the pipe. If it's high temperature, and I'm assuming this must be an above ground pipeline, then your shoes could well be in the range of three feet (one metre) in length. This due to much longer runs between expansion loops than would normally be experienced in a plant environment. Longer shoes accomodate greater movement without falling off of the supporting steel.
