I got curious myself and did a little reading on it. As near as I can
tell the factor of 2 accounts for the change in effective area with
pressure applied. There's a lot of literature around on the topic and
I think the gasket factors are being revised or at least revisited
and there may be a more satisfactory explanation in some report
somewhere. Do a Scirus search for more info.
