Well voiced Paul. I'm sure that there is a lot of truth to what you've said. I hope I don't sound critical. I really am curious as to what prompts this type of question and enlightenment as to what the juniors are up against.

I've found from working in different companies that CAD Support doesn't always teach these things, and I'm not sure they should. CAD support should have the software creator's documentation readily available on the company's intranet for training/self-learning purposes.
For some reason, software creators' documentation is often incomplete. Admittedly, keeping up with patches, revisions, clarifications and the like make it hard for a vendor to continually update their documentation
for their customers.
I could tell you some interesting stories...
On the other hand, sometimes smaller shops will hire an "AutoPlant person" with years of experience and expect them to be able to install, configure, customize (eg., write/modify custom client specs), etc. and run the program(s) over a network. Maybe this is the case here.
From personal experience, I know that sometimes software setups are done by "some guy" (and largely undocumented or documented haphazardly in an obscure location) that no longer is employed by the company and the organization hobbles along by taking the band-aid approach to software problems. I also know that preventing fires by creating a long-term plan to avoid having them happen in the first place is difficult to do if you're always running around putting out fires.
