Good example of the potential for misunderstandings and the limitations of e-mail. I have made an assumption that I understood the context of the question. Clearly there are many possible applications of the term "transition piece". Emphasises the importance of giving some background to the question to get the best responses. The lesson for me is to request some clarity if needed before responding.

In this particular case Section VIII Div 1 mandates a taper of 3:1. It's made to avoid high peak stress.

Out of curiosity I did a Google search on 'transition piece' AND piping and got 4700 hits, more or less. Turns out there are lot of things called transition pieces. Some are reducers going from one diameter to another and others for attaching a run of round ducting to a run of rectangular duct work. Some transitions are for structural purposes like the 3:1 taper, but most of the hits I got seemed to address transitions that attempt to reduce flow restriction. Maybe the original questioner would favor us with an actual explanation of what he's talking about.
