Oops! I should have looked closer at the post title and I also see that you're asking about top/bottom not side/bottom. It's early where I am and my eyes aren't open yet. Maybe this is still of some use. I'll do another post just on gauge glasses when I wake up.

Hi,
Take a look at the following link for indicator selection.

For positioning you'll need the instrument dimensional data sheet. On the P&ID you will find the NLL (normal liquid level), and on the data sheet there is a mid-range or set point indicated on the external cage. There is a dimension from the set point to the upper connection. The upper nozzle connection on the vessel is to be set the same distance above the NLL as this dimension on the data sheet. For the lower connection on the vessel you'll have to refer to the data sheet again. Add the dimension from upper connection centreline to bottom connection FOF to the pipe spool dimensions, e.g. gasket, valve, gasket, flange, tee. Set the lower nozzle connection on the vessel this same calculated dimension below the upper connection. The same applies if you are mounting this onto a bridle. Orientation also has to be decided of course.

Subject: [PipingDesign] Level Indicator / Level Glass
Hello
Please tell me how to design / Select a level indicator for a absorption column. Is there any Code / Standard available for refrence.
And also how to calculate the center to center distance for top/bottom type level indicator.
Thanx
